Goat Care

At Redbud Rock Farm, we take the health and wellness of our goats seriously. Every goat is given CDT and Pneumonia vaccinations and all adult goats are screened yearly for CL, CAE, and Johnnes. All goats over 1 year that were screened in 2015 tested negative for each of these diseases.

Both bucks and does are fed mixed grass hay and free-choice minerals with Purina Mills Honor Show Chow containing 16% protein. Does also receive Dumor Goat Sweet Formula containing 16% protein.

All does are trained to eat in their own food bin twice a day, ensuring proper nutrition for each goat. This method works well with a small herd and helps us have an up close look at our goats daily.

We use the FAMACHA method to monitor for anemia and complete our own fecal analyses, as needed. We also use copper boluses every 6-8 months, especially to help during barber pole season.

Hooves are trimmed every 5-7 weeks using shears and an electric hoof knife designed for goats. We are quite pleased with the performance of this great tool.

On our farm, the goats have more time spent on pedicures than the humans.
